Eligibility for the license plate is based upon issuance of an industrial firefighter certification from the SFFMA Certification Program and appears on the front of individual membership cards.

Individuals issued at least a Basic Firefighter or Module 2: Firefighter I (Basic) certificate effective prior to January 1, 2015 are eligible for the license plate, as are individuals issued a full SFFMA Firefighter I certificate after that date.

Approval by the Texas Legislature to create a Retired Firefighter license plate passed in March 2025 to be implemented in September 2025. SFFMA received no notice of this update. As soon as we learned of this plate staff have been checking the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Specialty Plate Guide (last updated December 2025) for information and a link to the appropriate form (VTR-3135). As of April 21, 2026 no link to an application is available. As soon as we find information on this we will update this page with a link to the form.
